I am taking responsibility for organizing the Somerset Sperrings from the DNA project and have been experimenting with the best way to approach organizing the data and the search.  Right now the entries are part of my overall Turnbull family tree because I expect them all to intersect at some point.  I will probably generate a separate county wide tree at some point.  My plan is to go parish by parish doing as complete a search as I can and making family trees along the way.

In looking for a very specific Sperring of my own, I stumbled across a really stable groups of Sperrings in the 1700's-1800's in Lympsham.  The FreeREG project has almost completed the christening, marriage and burial transcriptions and the families tended to stay put which makes them nice to study.  In addition I have found a living Sperring that I hope to entice to submit DNA so our project can have a really good Somerset sample.

So far I have identified several different Sperring families from the Parish Register.  I think each line is worthy of a blog entry so I will pick this up after the break.....

  1. Hi,
as part of my own family history, I am also interested in the Sperrings of Lympsham, and would be most interested in the outcome of your research.
My Grandmother, Edna Joan Sperring - born Worle, Somerset, was the daughter of a Frank Sperring - born Worle 1879. I believe him to be the son of a Charles Sperring - born Lympsham 1843, but have yet to confirm this.
I have various census returns (Lympsham and Worle), but also Lympsham (1737-1885) and Worle Parish record transcriptions for births, marriages and burials. These transcripts were provided by the Weston-Super-Mare and District Family History Society, but I'm sure I could pass them on.
If I could of help in any other way, then please let me know.
    kind regards,
    Steve Saville

  2. Steve - we are still looking for a male Somerset Sperring to join in the DNA project http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spearin/Index.html so if you know anyone that fits the bill please encourage them to join - I have seriously neglected this project because I got diverted into another line in my own genealogy but expect to post more soon - I have some of the census returns too so I will start posting them up here next - cheers

  3. Hi again,
the only male Sperring from this line of Sperrings that I am aware of would be a cousin of my fathers.
Unfortunately, the family lost contact many years ago. He'll be elderly now and I know he married, but don't know of any male offspring.
I'll ask my father if he knows anything. Also I intend to visit my Somerset relatives in the near future, and I'll make some enquiries.

On a separate note, the Lympsham Parish baptism transcripts I hold,
show many children born to a Samuel and Ann(e) Sperring from 1817 to
    1848!
Yet the burial transcripts detail a burial of an Anne Sperring (wife
of Samuel) in 1828. I think we either have two different sets of
Samuel and Ann(e) Sperrings, or Samuel remarried another Ann(e) after (and very closely after) the first Anne's death. I believe this, or one of these, Samuel Sperrings to be a Gt, Gt, Gt Grandfather of mine. I would be interested in your interpretation of events.
    Good luck with the project,
    Steve
